Critical Theories in Counselor Education is a textbook designed to center and apply critical theories (i.e., Critical Race Theory, Feminist Theory, Queer Theory, Critical Disability Theory, Critical Indigenous Theory, and Black Critical Theory) to counselor education. This book espouses that critical theory is central and foundational to the five CACREP doctoral domains. As such, Critical Theories in Counselor Education equips both faculty and students with the theoretical grounding and applied tools to challenge systems of oppression, reimagine counselor identity, and transform counseling praxis in ways that promote equity and liberation. Mainly, this book challenges the unspoken assumptions about humanness and being, normalcy and deviance that undergird systems of oppression. As the counseling profession grapples with complex societal inequities and calls for anti-oppressive practice, this book provides a timely and essential resource for re-envisioning counselor education through a critical, justice-oriented lens.

Dr. Emily Goodman-Scott is a Professor of CounselorEducation at Old Dominion University, where she coordinates the schoolcounseling program and directs the AACTE Holmes Scholars Program. She holds aPhD in Counselor Education and Supervision from Virginia Tech. Her work focuseson advancing equitable and just education systems through scholarship,advocacy, and partnerships with school communities. Her research centers schoolcounseling, particularly multi-tiered systems of support, disabilities and diversabilities,and qualitative research methods. An American Counseling Association Fellow andrecipient of the ACA Research Award, Dr. Goodman-Scott has publishedextensively and is the most frequently published scholar to date in the journalProfessional School Counseling. She serves on several national journaleditorial review boards, including as Associate Editor for ProfessionalSchool Counseling. A leader in the counseling profession, she has served onACA’s governing council and co-led its DEIJ Task Force, as President for theAssociation for Child and Adolescent Counseling, and as Chair of the VirginiaSchool Counselor Association. Dr. Ahmad R. Washington is Department Chair and anAssociate Professor in the Department of Counseling and Human Development atthe University of Louisville. He earned his PhD in Counselor Education andSupervision from the University of Iowa. His scholarship examinesanti-Blackness in education and the helping professions, multicultural andsocial justice school counseling, and critical hip-hop school counseling. Dr.Washington has received numerous honors for his scholarship, including the inauguralAssociation for Multicultural Counseling and Development Asa HilliardScholarship Award and the American Educational Research Association DivisionE–Counseling and Human Development Distinguished Research Award. In 2023, hewas inducted into the Martin Luther King Jr. Collegium of Scholars at MorehouseCollege. He served as an Antiracism Commissioner for the American CounselingAssociation from 2021 to 2023. His work centers critical, culturally responsiveapproaches to counseling and education and advances more equitable practicesfor students and communities.Dr. Rawn Boulden is an associate professor and counseling program coordinator in the Department of Educational Leadership, Policy, and Human Development at North Carolina State University. He earned his PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision from OldDominion University. His scholarship focuses on rural and school-based mentalhealth and inclusive K–12 practices, with an emphasis on advancing equitableand accessible counseling and educational environments. Dr. Boulden haspublished extensively in peer-reviewed journals, including ProfessionalSchool Counseling, The Rural Educator, and Journal of SchoolHealth, and has contributed chapters to leading counseling texts. Hisscholarship has been recognized with honors including the SACES OutstandingPre-Tenure Counselor Educator Award and the WVU Outstanding Researcher Award.Dr. Boulden also serves as Associate Editor of Professional SchoolCounseling, contributing to the advancement of scholarship in the field.His work integrates research, counselor education, and advocacy to support themental health and educational success of students and communities, particularlythose in rural and underserved settings.
