TEXT IN SPANISH This book is not intended as a brief history of conservation and restoration of artistic heritage, but a compendium of the main criteria and practiced theories of heritage throughout history. It is intended that the reader, having finished the book, will have a basic understanding of how artistic heritage was restored in each epoch, why it was done in a certain way and who performed it. In turn, such knowledge is intended to constitute a tool to explore and evaluate those methods still in place, and those already obsolete. Este libro no pretende ser una breve historia de la conservación y de la restauración del patrimonio artístico, sino un compendio de los principales criterios y teorías practicadas sobre dicho patrimonio a lo largo de la historia. Se pretende que el lector -una vez concluida la lectura del libro-, tenga los conocimientos básicos sobre cómo se restauraba el patrimonio artístico en cada época histórica, por qué se hacía de una determinada manera y quién lo realizaba. A su vez, se pretende que dichos conocimientos constituyan una herramienta para poder confrontar criterios y teorías, y valorar aquellos que todavía están vigentes en la actualidad y aquellos que ya están obsoletos.
