This volume contains results of database research related to cooperative databases, with emphasis on four Japanese database-related projects, some of which are open to foreign researchers. They are Advanced Databases, Human Media Project, Genome Research and Meme Media. Topics that constitute cooperative databases are also covered in the volume, including multi-databases (heterogeneous database, query processing, mobile databases), wide-area network and hypertexts (WWW databases, hypermedia), multimedia databases (video databases, spatial and geographical databases), data mining and knowledge discovery, views (object-oriented view, materialized view), and transaction processing (cooperative work support, real-time). In addition, basic database topics such as database languages and file/hardware structures are also included.
