Witnessing from the heart of storms and their aftermath, the contributors to this special issue write from many locations, not only Western North Carolina, where in late September 2024 Hurricane Helene swept away homes and lives in a region many had considered a climate haven, but also the Potomac River Watershed, the Pacific Northwest, and the west coast of Ireland. As our environmental background becomes foreground, these artists and writers help us become more familiar with the uncanny temporalities in which we now live.
