Beskrivning
Clear English Pronunciation equips students to communicate effectively in English. Instead of relying solely on native‑speaker models, the goal is clear, natural English. The book promotes individualised pronunciation goals rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, encouraging learners to adapt their speech to different communicative contexts and audiences. In addition to examining the production of vowels and consonants, this book explores the prosodic dimensions of English, including rhythm, stress, silences, and intonation.By focusing on both speech sounds and communicative contexts, learners can develop pronunciation that is both intelligible and authentic, while gaining a deeper understanding of the patterns that contribute to clear and natural spoken language.Divided into six units, each featuring detailed articulatory explanations, sample sentences, and recordings to help learners improve their pronunciation, this updated second edition:· offers chapters and units reorganized in accordance with linguistics and pedagogical principles;· explains how pronunciation interacts with other aspects of communication, with extensive guidance on pronunciation teaching;· not only focuses on producing speech sounds, but also on perceiving and understanding them;· offers refined and improved visual systems of target sounds, explanations, exercises, and sample sentences, including explanations of common mispronunciations for English learners;· explains and illustrates the melody and rhythm that underpin intelligible, natural pronunciation;· supports students in recognising and practising the pronunciation features most relevant to them. With its interactive companion website offering updated recordings and expanded explanations, Clear English Pronunciation gives international learners everything they need to strengthen their pronunciation for real‑world communication. It is a standout textbook for anyone aiming to speak English with clarity and confidence across diverse social settings.

"This book supports the teaching and learning of English pronunciation while pluralising reference points for its acquisition. Adopting an approach that aims at clarity rather than the erasure of pre-existing sounds, it provides strategies that can be readily applied. It also covers aspects that are easily overlooked, including intonation and the use of silences, making it a valuable resource for the training of L2 English speakers."Marco Santello, University of Turin, Italy"An essential, practical resource for English as a global lingua franca. Avoiding a native-speaker model, Smakman shifts the focus from rigid accent reduction to international intelligibility and communicative confidence. The second edition of the book provides more practical teaching guidance, strengthened theoretical chapters, updated recordings, and a chapter structure that is both more pedagogically effective and phonologically coherent. Through rich examples and interactive practice, it equips diverse L2 learners to achieve clear, natural, and effective cross-cultural communication."Sofiya Mitsova, South West University “Neofit Rilski”, Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria"For a language shared across the world, pronunciation teaching must look beyond native-speaker norms. Smakman offers a compelling alternative to treating Received Pronunciation or General American as universal goals: an approach grounded in intelligibility, flexibility, and communicative effectiveness. Accessible explanations and purposeful practice make Clear English Pronunciation a valuable resource for learners and teachers, helping speakers communicate effectively across linguistic backgrounds while preserving their linguistic identity."Giuseppe Pappalardo, Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, Italy"Clear English Pronunciation is a must-have resource for learners of English who want to improve their pronunciation to become comprehensible and to sound natural in different social settings. The textbook helps learners better understand the underlying principles of English pronunciation through many examples as well as plenty of opportunity for individualized practice."Natalia Edisherashvili, University of Tartu, Estonia"Clear English Pronunciation by Dick Smakman is mandatory for all speakers of English as L2 who want to achieve confidence and intelligibility with their own pronunciation in different communicative situations. The second edition builds upon the successful first one with more practical teaching guidance and updated recordings – which is particularly useful – while also strengthening the theoretical foundation."Gergana Padareva-Ilieva, South-West University “Neofit Rilski”, Bulgaria"Dick Smakman acknowledges that all L2 speakers are from somewhere and have their own specific trajectories. He convincingly shows that this is no problem because it suffices to work on international intelligibility. Clear English Pronunciation is a very practical resource that achieves this for English speakers around the world."Patrick Heinrich, Ca’Foscari University of Venice, Italy
