This special issue of Cinéma & Cie explores the cultural dynamics, ideological aporias and political struggles that characterize the relationship between Maoism and national cinemas, from the immediate aftermath of the Cultural Revolution to the present day. All the articles included in the special issue highlight the complexity of the process of translation and ‘reinvention’ of Maoism in different cultural contexts, focusing on subjects and historical episodes that have been suppressed in public debates and in traditional film history books.

Federico Zecca is a Research Fellow at the University of Udine in Italy, where he teaches Media Theory and Film Semiotics. He is part of the editorial staff of the journals "Cinéma & CIE: International Film Studies Journal" and "Cinergie: Il cinema e le altre arti", and of the editorial board of the journal Porn Studies (Routledge). He is a member of the Scientific Committee of the Udine/Gorizia FilmForum. Marco Dalla Gassa is a film scholar, assistant professor at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice. His academic research focuses on Asian cinema, orientalism, cinematic representation of cultural differences, auteur theory and film analysis. Corrado Neri is associate professor at the Jean Moulin University, Lyon 3, and visiting professor at National Taiwan University of the Art, Taipei (2016-2017). He has conducted extensive research on Chinese cinema in Beijing and Taipei and published many articles on books and magazine in English, French and Italian.
