Choice Words

Peter Johnston grew up in New Zealand, taught elementary school, and came to the United States for his PhD. His fascination with, and admiration for, children’s learning and, no less, teachers’ teaching, led to his research, which explores relationships among classroom talk, children’s engagement, and literate, social, and emotional development. Recent books include Opening Minds: Using Language to Change Lives, Engaging Literate Minds: Developing Children's Social, Emotional, and Intellectual Lives, K-3 (with teacher collaborators), and Teens Choosing to Read: Fostering Social, Emotional, and Intellectual Growth Through Books (with Gay Ivey). Peter has received numerous awards for his research and several of his books have been translated into multiple languages. He is a member of the Reading Hall of Fame.

In the complex world of school, every teacher needs a rock, something to anchor their moment-by-moment decisions that profoundly impact each child’s life. Peter Johnston’s not-to-be-missed revised edition of Choice Words is that steadying rock. Setting this book apart from others, Peter clearly explains why embracing a mindset that develops the social-emotional alongside academics is an essential component of children’s literacy learning, and, what happens when we don’t. With many new and accessible examples, he demonstrates how to effortlessly weave a more conscious choice of language into one’s practice that benefits all of our children. Peter’s compelling new edition will change your professional life, (and maybe your personal life as well), now and forever.—Kathy Champeau, Reading Specialist, Literacy Consultant, Teacher and Child AdvocateWhen Peter writes, "Once we start noticing certain things, it is difficult not to notice them again," he is spot on. Once you read about the importance of teacher language you have a mental model for the rest of your life. In this powerful second edition of Choice Words Dr. Johnston makes an unforgettable connection between the way a teacher speaks and the mindsets that develop in their students. Whether you are new to Choice Words or have read it before, this second edition is a must-read. —Holly Prast, Assistant Superintendent for the Kimberly Area School DistrictTwenty years after the publication of Peter Johnston’s seismic groundbreaker Choice Words, the language that teachers and their students use in classrooms continues to be a big deal! In this eagerly-awaited revision, Johnston guides new and seasoned readers to notice, name, and mull the significance of classroom language patterns that build agency, foster a growth mindset, and ultimately equip children to contribute to a just and democratic society. Indeed, “talk is the central tool of our trade,” and with this text Johnston offers educators a transformative apprenticeship to his decades-long study of classroom interactions that fuel human growth. Updates include a strong emphasis on anti-bias, anti-racist teaching and social-emotional learning. Chapters end with practical “Extensions” for further learning and application.—Annie Ward, Co-author of From Striving to Thriving and Intervention ReinventionThe first edition of Choice Words ranks at the top of my list of professional books for educators. Happily, the second edition continues to occupy that top spot. Although we sometimes wonder if we need a second edition of a book, I assure you that we need this one! Peter Johnston understands and illuminates the power of language in teaching and learning. Teaching is a great deal about what we say and what we do. But too often we focus only on the instructional moves and ignore the importance of language to transform children’s lives both in and out of the classroom. Peter’s deep dive into language is staggering. He listens attentively to kids as if looking through a kaleidoscope of language with its intricate, ever-changing patterns- its nuance, its precision, and its power. Although based on solid, longstanding research, this book is not merely theoretical. It is also extremely practical and easy for educators to use. This second edition of Choice Words is filled with ideas, approaches, and actions, all carefully rooted in thoughtful consideration of how to build capable, agentive children. My first read of Choice Words forever changed me as a teacher and even as a mom. I’ve loved it, and as with the first edition, I will return to this new edition time and time again. I’m hoping and guessing you will do the same. Enjoy!—Stephanie Harvey, Author/Coauthor of Strategies That Work, From Striving to Thriving and The Comprehension Toolkit
