Kwang Leong Choy [DPhil (oxon), DSc, FIMMM,FRSC, CSi] is a professor of Materials Discoveryand Director of the UCL Institute for MaterialsDiscovery. She has pioneered the novel electrostaticspray-assisted vapour deposition (a variant ofCVD) technology, which is not only low cost, ecofriendly, and energy efficient, but also enhancescoated product performance. Her contributions tothe understanding of interactions between gaseouschemical species and solid substrates enables thecontrol of the nucleation and growth of materialswith a well-controlled structure and compositionat the molecular level. This has led to thecreation of high-performance ceramic films andnew nanocomposite coatings. This technology hasbeen successfully translated from the laboratory toindustry, with the creation of two spin-off companies, and has led to Professor Choy being awardedthe Grunfeld Memorial Award and Medal by theInstitute of Materials for recognition of her professionalcontributions which have had significantimpact on engineering applications. Many of her advanced nanostructured ceramiccoating materials and CVD-based coating technologieshave led to significant impact and been exploitedfor industrial applications. These include ceramiccoatedfibre-reinforced composites, ceramic thermalbarrier coatings, superthin film inorganictransparent conducting films for displays and thinfilm solar cells, as well as multifunctional nanocompositecoatings for tribological applications. She has authored over 250 peer-reviewed publications, including 5 books and 20 patents innanomaterials, superthin/thin/thick films, andnanocomposite coatings for structural, functional, and biomedical applications. She has alsocontributed to the Handbook of NanostructuredMaterials and Nanotechnology by Academic Press(2000), which received an award of excellencefrom the Association of American Publishers. She has given over 150 plenary/keynote papers/invited lectures. She is a fellow of the Institute forMaterials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3), a fellowof the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC),and is a Chartered Scientist, CSci. She has beenawarded Guest Professorships at the University ofUppsala (2001/03), Ningbo Institute of MaterialsTechnology and Engineering (NIMTE, 2010/2012),and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS)Visiting Professorship for Senior InternationalScientist (2011/2013). She also participates in developingthe European materials research roadmapand represents the UK in the Materials Experts TaskForces for High Level Group of EU Member Statesand H2020 Associated Countries on Nanosciences,Nanotechnologies (2016/17). Professor Choy’s work has led to her participationin numerous large research programmes. These include EU, EPSRC, and government flagshipgrants, as well as research contracts and collaborationto develop new engineering products withparticular characteristics with industrial companiessuch as Rolls Royce, Aero Engine Control,EADS, PVi, QinetiQ, DSTL, BG/Advantica, andIMPT. She has been the international expertreviewer for Ontario Research Fund, Hong KongProductivity Council, and Greek Ministry ofEducation/European Commission. She has beenawarded Guest Professorships at the University ofUppsala (2001/03), Ningbo Institute of MaterialsTechnology and Engineering (NIMTE, 2010/2012),and Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) VisitingProfessorship for Senior International Scientist(2011/2013).
