Characterization of Diplomatic Spaces

Studies focusing on both spaces and specific sites from Classical Antiquity have increased exponentially in recent decades, given that there was a particular and significant ‘turning point’ from the 1990s onwards, when attempts were made to examine historical space from a social perspective. The information gleaned from archaeological, epigraphic and numismatic sources has shaped new interpretations of classical literary sources, which, in turn, have sought to offer fresh perspectives to Classical Studies. One such new approach is the study of space in an integrated and social manner, rather than merely as a backdrop to political, military and diplomatic processes. This book is dedicated to examining various aspects of the public uses of space in Rome, as well as analysing specific settings that helped to give particular meaning to political, diplomatic and social relations in the Roman world. From this perspective, this publication will focus on the uses—and also the abuses—of diplomatic space in Rome, with the aim of providing further insights into how classical communities interacted with their surrounding environment.
