Caxton's Book Of Curtesye

Caxton's Book of Curtesye presents a structured guide devoted to shaping conduct and refinement in young readers preparing to enter polite society. Framed as moral instruction, the work outlines expectations for speech, behavior, and personal discipline within households and public spaces. Emphasis is placed on humility, moderation, and respect, presenting courtesy not as superficial display but as outward expression of inward virtue. Through measured counsel, the text encourages attentiveness to elders, restraint in conversation, and careful observation of social hierarchy. Manners are portrayed as essential tools for harmony, reinforcing order within both family and community life. Instruction extends beyond simple etiquette to matters of character, urging readers to cultivate honesty, patience, and self control as foundations for reputation. The tone blends authority with guidance, suggesting that disciplined habits formed early will shape honorable adulthood. Rather than focusing solely on external polish, the treatise presents courtesy as moral education intertwined with faith and responsibility. Ultimately, the work reflects a worldview in which civility, obedience, and ethical awareness form the pillars of personal development and social stability.
