Beskrivning
Why does illicit trade emerge, expand, and persist? This volume argues that the answer cannot be found in any single cause, actor, or level of analysis. Rather, illicit trade emerges through causal configurations in which motivations, opportunities, relationships, institutions, infrastructures, and broader structural conditions interact across different contexts.Adopting an interdisciplinary, comparative, and causal approach, the volume examines these processes across micro, meso, and macro levels, connecting individual motivations and social relations with organisational networks, markets, legal and technological infrastructures, political conditions, conflict, migration governance, financial systems, and environmental pressures. It shows how illicit trade becomes attractive, possible, organised, scalable, tolerated, and resilient.A central contribution of the volume is to distinguish the different functions that factors perform within causal processes. Some cause illicit trade by generating demand, incentives, pressures, or opportunities; others enable it by making illicit practices possible, scalable, or durable; still others facilitate it by reducing risk, concealing activities, or connecting actors. These roles are context-dependent, and illicit trade is frequently embedded in licit markets, institutions, infrastructures, and social relations.Bringing together perspectives from law, criminology, economics, sociology, political science, international relations, migration studies, technology studies, environmental studies, and finance, the volume offers an integrated framework for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners seeking to understand why illicit trade persists. This is the second volume of the GLITSS trilogy, a four-year collaborative endeavour involving nearly 300 researchers from 48 countries under the COST Action Globalization, Illicit Trade, Security and Sustainability (GLITSS).

"Illicit trade is usually studied through the individual lenses of single disciplines. This volume starts from the premise that a phenomenon so complex calls for interdisciplinary approaches. Each chapter is the work of a team of scholars from different fields who come together to consider some of the most pressing open questions about why illicit trade happens and why it persists. Many of their answers raise further questions about illicit trade, but that is what makes the subject matter so compelling."- Donna Yates, Maastricht University"The Causes of Illicit Trade is an ambitious and valuable contribution to the study of illicit markets. Drawing on insights from several disciplines, it links individual motivations and social networks to the legal, economic, and political conditions that allow illicit exchange to take root. I particularly welcome its attention to the mechanisms that make these markets possible and sustain them over time, and to the roles played by legitimate businesses, professional intermediaries, and state actors. From the transmission of criminal know-how within mafia families to the opportunities created by conflict and technological change, the volume offers a rich basis for comparison across markets and settings. Essential reading for scholars and policymakers seeking to understand why illicit trade persists and how interventions can address the conditions that sustain it."- Federico Varese, Professor of Sociology, Sciences Po and Senior Research Fellow, Nuffield College, Oxford, author of Mafia Life"Illicit trade, whether in drugs, wildlife or any of a wide variety of goods and services, has been a prominent issue for more than 20 years. Mostly the attention has been on estimating the size of the specific trades or on policy recommendations as to how to reduce them. There has not been nearly enough attention to what generates these global supply chains. This volume provides a welcome set of essays that explore the many factors that lead to illegal trades, a necessary preliminary to serious policy analysis." - Peter Reuter, University of Maryland
