An arresting, musical ode to the forgotten voyages and resilient identities of indentured peoples.Cargo Hold of Stars gives voice to the millions of indentured men and women, mostly from India and China, who were brought to Mauritius between 1849 and 1923. Kept in close quarters in the ship’s cargo hold, many died; most never returned home. Here, Khal Torabully introduces the concept of “Coolitude,” echoing Aimé Césaire’s “Negritude” to imbue the term with profound dignity, pride, and a resilient cultural identity. Stating that ordinary language could not capture these diverse voices, Torabully develops a new “poetics of Coolitude”: a French peppered with Mauritian Creole, brilliant wordplay, and neologisms. The humor in these linguistic acrobatics only underscores the violence in which these poems are steeped. Deftly translated by Nancy Naomi Carlson, Cargo Hold of Stars is the song of an uprooting, destruction, and reconstruction. Yet it also celebrates setting down roots, conjuring an ideal homeland of fraternity and reconciliation in which bodies, memories, and languages mingle—a compelling odyssey defining the essence of humankind.

Poesi inom Skonlitteratur

Khal Torabully is a Mauritian poet, essayist, filmmaker, and theorist who writes primarily in French. He coined the term “Coolitude” to describe the cultural, linguistic, and imaginative worlds formed by indentured labor and its diasporas. His poetry draws on Mauritian Creole, South Asian languages, French, and neologism to address uprooting, oceanic passage, memory, and reconciliation. He has published more than twenty-five books and has developed Coolitude across poetry, essays, and film. Nancy Naomi Carlson is a poet and translator from French. Her translation of Khal Torabully’s Cargo Hold of Stars: Coolitude received the Oxford-Weidenfeld Translation Prize. She has translated work by René Char, Samira Negrouche, Alain Mabanckou, Abdourahman A. Waberi, and Sylvie Kandé, among others.

"Torabully’s book is an inspired tribute to a people taken from their homes in India, China, and other Asian communities and forced into labor. The poems stand out for their lyrical richness and spiritual depth: the experience of exile is interwoven with a desire for reconciliation. The poems are written in a French infused with Mauritian Creole, Old Scandinavian, Old French, Hindi, Bhojpuri, Urdu, and various neologisms. . . . Cargo Hold of Stars: Coolitude celebrates diversity and the beauty of resilience. Even those unfamiliar with the cultural heritage of Mauritius will not only enjoy the collection but will feel expanded by it."
