In Jakarta she tried Indonesian rendang and discovered it closely matched the flavours of Cape Malay denningvleis. While in the Netherlands, she was pleasantly surprised to discover a strong Dutch influence in Cape Malay baking and the similarities between the soetkoekie and speculaas.
