As the US Civil War was raging, between 1860 and 1870 Canada was involved in its own series of military events.The large British Army presence in Canada, due largely to the tensions caused by the Civil War; the Fenian Raids of 1866 and 1870; and the Red River Expedition have often been overshadowed by events south of the border.Enhanced by full colour plates and rare photographs from Montreal photographer William Notman, this fine text examines the Canadian campaigns from 1860-70, while illustrating the uniforms of the Canadian Volunteer Militia, the British Army and staff officers.

Mer information

David Ross and Grant Tyler are curators with Parks Canada and the Canadian Armed Forces, respectively. They are established authorities on Canada’s military heritage, having previously written Men-at-Arms 197, The Royal Canadian Mounted Police 1873-1987. Rick Scollins pursued a career as an artist after four years at art college and a postgraduate teaching course at Cardiff. Rick quickly developed a distinct style and, despite being a pacifist, he gained a feel for military subjects. His artwork was always realistic and is highly sought after by collectors. Rick Scollins died in 1992.
