“Dr. Kirk is the per-eminent scholar of Canadian-Cuban relations and he has produced a study that will likely be the standard reference work on the subject. Canada–Cuba Ties provides a rich overview of relations between the countries from 1960 to 2025 and detailed examinations of three key Canadian administrations since 1993. It well demonstrates that there has been a remarkable normalcy in the relationship, which has enabled both countries to accommodate differences and resolve disputes peacefully. Kirk’s keen analyses offer important lessons for a constructive approach to engaging with Cuba – based on empathy and mutual respect – that US policymakers would be wise to adopt.”
