Beskrivning
This volume explores the little-known history of a great island at the heart of the Mediterranean: Byzantine Sardinia. The term refers here to a long phase in the island’s past, when Sardinia was first, in every respect, a province of the Empire, and later—between the ninth and tenth centuries—a regional society still deeply shaped by Eastern Roman models. These influences left a lasting mark not only on political structures, but also on settlement patterns, social practices, and religious culture. Bringing history and archaeology into dialogue, the author weaves a fragmented and uneven body of evidence into a clear and compelling narrative. The book examines political developments, social and economic dynamics, as well as levels of literacy and the production of written culture, all within the wider framework of Mediterranean history. The result is a fresh, original, and up-to-date synthesis, of interest to specialists and general readers alike.

Recensioner i media

An integral part of the East Roman or Byzantine empire from the 6th into the 10th century, the medieval history of the Mediterranean island of Sardinia has remained until now largely ignored by historians. Salvatore Cosentino's important and very welcome intervention re-integrates the island’s early medieval history into the mainstream and represents a significant step forward in our understanding, not only of the island and its medieval culture, economy and society, but also of the history of the empire itself.
