Buildability in Practice

Buildability in Practice: Shaping a Sustainable and Equitable Built Environment explores the often-overlooked concept of buildability in construction, how easily and efficiently a design can be built. It offers practical strategies and real-world examples to improve project outcomes, reduce waste, and promote sustainability. Readers will learn:How rationalisation encourages critical evaluation of design choices to reduce complexity and cost. How simplicity theory advocates for straightforward, user-friendly construction solutions. How standardisation promotes uniformity in design elements, enhancing speed, quality, and compatibility across projects. How system theory integrates all these elements, helping practitioners view buildability as a holistic approach that aligns design, planning, and construction processes. The authors show that a limited understanding of buildability principles, coupled with the failure to integrate them into the project procurement process, significantly contributes to the suboptimal performance observed in construction projects. They then address this issue by providing clear explanations of buildability principles, practical integration strategies in construction project delivery, and testimonies that demonstrate successful implementation. This book serves as a comprehensive educational resource for stakeholders, including clients, contractors, and consultants, promoting a shared understanding and fostering collaboration from the early stages of project planning. Buildability is a universal challenge in construction, affecting project efficiency, sustainability, and cost worldwide. With increasing global demand for eco-friendly and efficient building practices, this book offers practical and theoretical insights relevant to professionals, academics, and policymakers across the UK, Europe, North America, and beyond.
