"This important text moves us beyond bad news about black men in higher education. The editors generously offer rich insights into their lives and trajectories toward success. This book speaks powerfully to a nation that has long failed to acknowledge black men's brilliance. It is a refreshing, inspiring read." - Shaun R. Harper, Executive Director, Center for the Study of Race and Equity in Education, University of Pennsylvania, USA "Black Men in the Academy presents compelling narratives of black males from all around the country. Throughout the volume, the contributors highlight salient educational, social, economic, and familial obstacles that they had to overcome to achieve success. This volume, in my opinion, is an important contribution to the scholarly literature on black males. It offers a realistic but contemporary glimpse of what black males often endure to achieve success in American society." - James L. Moore III, EHE Distinguished Professor of Urban Education and Executive Director of the Todd Anthony Bell National Resource Center on the African American Male, The Ohio State University, USA "As a complement to the body of writing that supports the anti-deficit perspective on African-American males' educational success, this book provides strong evidence of the good that can result from positive influences. These inspiring stories describe the determination, spirit, and occasional good luck of seventeen individuals sometimes with, sometimes without, the positive support of their parents, teachers, community leaders, academic administrators, and church members. Combined with empirical research and outcomes from successful programs, these stirring narratives provide the 'third leg of the stool' demonstrating black male postsecondary success and should be required reading for every black man in college." Michael J. Cuyjet, Professor Emeritus, University of Louisville, USA
