Beskrivning
Focusing on the commonly advocated concept of social inclusion in the lives of people with intellectual disabilities, this book argues that the current approach has not succeeded in supporting people to lead good lives in the community. It instead advocates the importance of belonging as a basis for a good life, and examines the implications of belonging at both conceptual and practical levels for educators and social workers. The book includes the life histories of various individuals, detailing their experiences with unbelonging, and their differing journeys navigating society as people with disabilities. Far from being an easily defined category, this book provides a multifaceted and nuanced perspective on what it means to be human, too commonly overlooked in conventional human rights discussions. This is a vital work in the field of research regarding human rights. It will appeal to scholars, activists, and persons with disabilities who are interested in looking beyond traditional discourse, to a new future of human rights with belonging as a key part of socialisation, and its implications for public policy.

This heartwarming, and sometimes heart wrenching, book presents the diverse life histories of seven people with disability from around the globe, reflecting on what belonging means to them personally, within their families, and communities. Each life history brings to life the myriad ways in which belonging (or barriers to belonging) are experienced and the impact of this on the story tellers’ lives. The book invites readers to consider belonging as a social, interpersonal and relational experience. Professor Angela Dew, Disability and Inclusion, Deakin University, Melbourne, AustraliaThis book revolutionises the belonging and embodied difference research fields by doing much more than giving voice to disabled individuals. The book is a must read for those who want to at once understand and explain the phenomenon of belonging in relationship to displacement and intersectional difference in a genuinely relational way by transcending simplistic conceptions of home, disabled self and becoming. Collectively, the embodied experiential renditions of disabled folks compiled in this volume offer powerful counternarrative conceptions and articulations that defy cliches and rigid categorizations.Alexis Padilla, Associate, Adjunct Faculty, City University of New York, Hunter College, USAThis fascinating book explores the meanings and experiences of belonging through life histories by a diverse group of disabled indivituals. It also provides informative historical and theoretical accounts of the various ways beloning has been understood. The book is an urgent reminder of the importance of belonging, not least in our times, when political, cultural and natural forces lead to increasing and often devastating displacement of vulnerable people.Rannveig Traustadóttir, Professor Emerita and Director, Centre for Disability Studies, School of Education, University of Iceland, IcelandBelonging in the Life Journeys of People with Disabiltiies is a profound and thought-provoking contribution to the global discourse on disability and human rights, and a refreshing antidote to the assumption that lived experience has true value only when viewed through the prism of academic theory and institutional scholarship. These deeply authentic life stories, spanning diverse societies and cultures, are respectfully bookended by Johnson and Gilliland’s rich reflections on the myriad meanings of belonging in all our lives.Stephen Hallett (OBE), Executive Director, Ability Beyond Borders (ABB)This is not an ordinary book. You cannot easily pass by the personal testimonies compiled here. They will make you weep and feel angry learning of the barriers erected by injustice and indifference; you will gasp with admiration at the tenacity and artfulness of those asserting the right to be treated with dignity and live fulfilling lives. To belong. Yes, you will also find the learned commentaries you are entitled to expect, which are brought to life by the exceptional, moving accounts of those with intense lived experience. Josef Szwarc, Senior Advisor Policy and Advocacy, The Victorian Foundation for Survivors of Torture Inc., Melbourne, AustraliaAn innovative and powerful analysis of belonging through a synthesis of scholarship and the life histories of seven disabled people from diverse countries and cultures whose voices speak clearly and eloquently of their lived experience of belonging.Roy Sainsbury, Emeritus Professor, Department of Social Policy and Social Work, University of York, UK
