Bedford became an important market town on the River Great Ouse during the Middle Ages. St Paul’s Church dates from this period and later both John Bunyan and John Wesley preached at the church. Lace making became the town’s major industry followed by other industries such as brewing and engineering and many buildings survive from past centuries, from the Town Hall to the Corn Exchange and the Victorian Higgins Art Gallery and Museum as well as more everyday buildings such as schools, pubs and hotels. More recent history is preserved in the remarkable Cardington airship hangars just outside the town.Bedford in 50 Buildings explores the history of the county town of Bedfordshire through a selection of its most interesting buildings and structures, showing the changes that have taken place over the years. The book will appeal to all those who live in Bedford or who have an interest in the area.
