Beskrivning
Dr. George Henderson is a singular figure in the history of the University of Oklahoma and the history of the state. His work as an scholar, a sociologist, and a social activist bridged the classroom and the community. Becoming a More Humane Person: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow draws on Henderson's life experiences to guide readers in living with kindness, humility, and compassion.Henderson was born to Alabama sharecroppers and labelled a "no-learner" as a child. Yet he went on to serve in the Air Force, earn a doctorate, and, in 1967, become the University of Oklahoma's third African American professor. Influenced by Martin Luther King, Jr., Henderson played a major role in the larger movement to improve race relations at OU.In addition to fresh material, this book weaves together the most essential ideas and insights from Henderson's previous works. Henderson uses personal stories that are rich with humor and historical perspective to illustrate bigger ideas. Henderson addresses challenges that shape both individual lives and collective society: what it means to be a good parent or teacher, how to confront poverty and violence, and more.Ultimately, this is a book of enduring wisdom earned across the span of an incredible life journey.

Recensioner i media

"Some lives leave a mark far beyond titles or accomplishments. The life of Dr. George Henderson is one of them—he is a hero of mine. His book is a testament to the quiet power of humility, courage, and unwavering compassion. It reminds us that our greatest legacy is found not in what we achieve for ourselves, but in what we inspire in others. This is the story of a man who continues to change lives and shape generations."—Joseph Harroz Jr., President of the University of Oklahoma"In this reflective capstone work, renowned educator and activist Dr. George Henderson draws on a lifetime of scholarship, teaching, and community engagement to ask a vital question: How can we become more humane? Through candid stories and hard-won insights Henderson offers readers a compassionate but challenging invitation to confront harm, practice dignity, and help build a more humane nation today and for future generations." Dr. Karlos K. Hill, Regents' Professor, University of Oklahoma"Dr. George Henderson looms large in the history of Norman and the University of Oklahoma. Becoming a More Humane Person offers in one volume a compelling summation of his career. The many topics examined—racism, education, war, parenting, people with disabilities, Christianity, and the Western tradition, to name a few—speak to the vastness of Dr. Henderson's curiosity, experience, and wisdom." —Eddie Malone, author of Sooner Spirit: The Rise of the Most Fanatical Fandom in College Sports
