«Contemporary, ‘critical’ exegesis after Bultmann’s ‘demythologization’ of the Bible seems to be separated by an unbridgeable gulf from the ‘pre-scientific’ and ‘spiritual’ approach of the early Christians. This volume, however, makes it unmistakably clear that such an impression in itself is a myth that needs to be superseded, if modern hermeneutics ever wants to regain the original and natural alignment of critical exegetical assessments with their immediate pastoral applications. Toward this goal there can hardly be imagined a better guide than Augustine, who became one of the most prolific and influential theologians of Christianity precisely because he succeeded in integrating highly critical theology based on a discerning spirituality. One can therefore wish that this book will occupy its highly deserved place not only on the shelves of historians, but also find its way into the studies of contemporary critical exegetes.» (Hubertus R. Drobner, Theological Faculty, University of Paderborn, Germany)«The reader interested in Augustine or patristic exegesis or even wider questions of hermeneutics will find in this volume a veritable feast to please the palate of the heart. From more general treatment of theory and practice of exegesis in Augustine, to treatments of more particular themes or works; from wider contextualizations in ancient philosophy and education to more specific localizations of exegesis in fifth-century polemic and controversy; and from the earliest works in Augustine’s career, to influence of Augustine’s biblical interpretation down to the sixteenth century’s Martin Luther and John of the Cross; this will be a programmatic set of studies, which will be sure to inspire increased and sustained study of the exegesis of Augustine. I highly recommend this excellent collection of essays.» (Professor John Cavadini, Chairperson, Department of Theology, University of Notre Dame)«A timely and welcome volume. After two decades during which the most dynamic scholarship on Ancient Christianity has tended to favor social and cultural historical approaches over more traditional philological and philosophical concerns, there are signs now of a change of mood. The ways in which Christians of the early centuries interpreted their Scriptures are once again at the center of interest. ‘Augustine: Biblical Exegete’ presents a rich fund of new research by highly accredited scholars, in essays that maintain a fine balance between close analysis and broader survey. Students seeking orientation and specialists in search of fresh insights will be equally well served. The collection covers considerably more than exegesis in the formal or technical sense, embracing Augustine’s poetic imagination; his social, psychological and intellectual milieu; and his complex legacy in later tradition and contemporary theological reflection. As interdisciplinary work on Christian late antiquity begins to come to grips with one of that culture’s most impressive and lasting achievements – its interpretation of the Bible – this latest volume in the respected series of Collectanea Augustiniana offers us precious resources.» (Mark Vessey, University of British Columbia)
