Attack Transport, first published in 1946, recounts the activities of the U.S.S. DOYEN (APA-1) in the Pacific during World War Two. Attack transport ships were critical to the success of the beach landings as they carried troops and their equipment directly to the assault beaches. During the course of the war, the U.S.S. Doyen traveled more than 100,000 miles, and took part in many Pacific battles including Saipan and Iwo Jima. Its crew and passengers were members of the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Army. The book, written by an officer on-board the Doyen, attempts, in the author's words, "to do but one thing - to describe the war in the Pacific as it was seen from one small unit of the fleet. It is not an analytical discussion of policies, but merely an account of the day-to-day life. Combat has been kept in its proper relation to other activities." Attack Transport captures what the men of the Doyen saw and felt - from loneliness and boredom, to the unbounded optimism and humor, to the horror and carnage of the war. This complete, unabridged edition includes 16 pages of photographs.
