Professor M. Hiriyanna was one of the greatest Sanskrit scholars and vedantic thinkers of our time. Trained in Sanskrit in the traditional system, he acquired grounding in Sanskrit grammar, etymology and prosody in the old oral way of learning. He was one of the pioneers of Kannada renaissance movement. Prof. Hiriyanna first wrote on psychology and educational?subjects?in?Kannada. A prolific writer, he has two famous books, Outlines of Indian Philosophy and Essentials of Indian Philosophy, both are examples of the art of writing at its best. Apart from the two classics, he has edited some difficult philosophical texts and elucidated them through his introductions and notes.
