This book is an excellent best-practice guide for senior managers and directors with innovation responsibilities. It describes how organisations of all sizes and sectors can apply design thinking principles, coupled with commercial awareness, to their innovation agenda. It explains how to keep the customer experience at the centre of innovation efforts and when to apply the range of available practices. It provides a clear, extensive rationale for all advice and techniques offered.Design thinking has become the number one innovation methodology for many businesses, but there has been a lack of clarity about how best to adopt it. It often requires significant mindset and behavioural changes and managers must have a coherent and integrated understanding in order to guide its adoption effectively. Many design thinking implementations are inadequate or sub-optimal through focusing too much on details of individual methods or being too abstract, with ill-defined objectives. This book uniquely provides integrated clarity and rationale across all levels of design thinking practice and introduces the ARRIVE framework for design thinking in business innovation, which the authors have developed over ten years of practice and research.ARRIVE = Audit – Research – Reframe – Ideate – Validate – Execute. The book contains a chapter for each of A-R-R-I-V-E, each of which has explanatory background and step-by-step methods instruction in a clear and standard format.Using the ARRIVE framework, the book provides high-level understanding, rationale and step-by-step guidance for CEOs, senior innovation leaders, innovation project managers and design practitioners in diverse public and private sectors. It applies equally well to innovation of products, services or systems.

"The corporate world has long needed – and much anticipated – a thoughtful treatise on the ways in which strategy and design thinking can (and should) work together. With the new book by Devitt, Ryan and Vaugh, I am happy to see that it has finally ARRIVEd!" - Jeanne Liedtka, Professor of Business Administration, Darden Business School at the University of Virginia."In a world of hyper change and complexity where being innovative is the difference between success and failure, this book is a must read. For leaders responsible for innovation that need a comprehensive understanding of design innovation, as well as the practical tools to apply, this has it all to ensure your innovations deliver the right value to your users and market again and again." - Mark Brennan, Vice President Software Development, SAP Labs Ireland."I really liked your book and can't wait to buy it. It was well worth waiting for it." - Raomal Perera, Adjunct Professor of Entrepreneurship INSEAD (Paris), Serial Entrepreneur, Consultant."This is a game changer publication in creating a more practical ‘how to’ process, building solidly on Design Thinking and packaged as ARRIVE. It offers a new and critical business-strategic alignment as its fourth pillar aligned with human desirability, technical feasibility and business viability. The impact of this makes ARRIVE a powerful tool in mitigating the biggest risks we all have of bringing the wrong idea to market and, equally, failing to change habits and behaviours of our teams." - Sean McNulty, founder and Chair of the Board at Dolmen Design, Ireland. Ex-Chair of the Technical Committee on Innovation Management at the National Standards Authority of Ireland."This is an easy-to-read, well-structured, logical and well-illustrated labour of love. It certainly is a very comprehensive tome. As I read through I asked myself would I read this from start to finish or would I use it as a reference book when engaging in a specific piece of work? The answer is that I would use it for both. While the target audience is at a senior level in companies I could see it having a very wide appeal at many levels including people just at the start of their journey. Well done on a lovely publication." - Stephen Hughes, Enterprise Ireland, Head of Consumer."ARRIVE offers a memorable and meaningful framework for applying design thinking to innovation projects and embedding a growth mindset in innovative organisations. We’ve seen it used to guide experienced innovators and newcomers alike as they adopt the new ways of working to put user-experience at the centre of their work. The book describes clearly how ARRIVE helps understanding and guides implementation, as well as including detailed instruction on 35 methods. It’s a great resource for all innovation leaders." - Denis Hayes, Managing Director, Industry Research and Development Group (IRDG).
