Animal Welfare

Kathy Anzuino (Author) Kathy Anzuino qualified as a veterinary surgeon at the University of Edinburgh in 1993 and spent the following decade working full-time in first-opinion clinical practice across both the private and charity sectors. During this period, she also volunteered overseas, including an 18 period in India, where she contributed to street dog welfare and rabies control programmes. She later completed a residency in farm animal health and welfare at the University of Bristol, where her work encompassed animal welfare research, teaching, and the development of preventive health and welfare strategies. This was followed by further formal study alongside locum veterinary work, before returning to Bristol to undertake doctoral research. She holds the RCVS Certificate in Animal Welfare Science, a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) from the University of Exeter, a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the Open University, and a PhD in goat health and welfare from the University of Bristol. Now semi-retired, she works as a groom at The Donkey Sanctuary, closely involved in all aspects of day-to-day donkey care.Joe Anzuino (Author) Joe Anzuino is a Veterinary Adviser for Welfare at the Animal and Plant Health Agency, supporting welfare policy development and its operational delivery. He qualified as a veterinary surgeon at the University of Edinburgh in 1991 and followed a career spanning clinical practice, animal welfare organisations and NGOs, working across diverse species and cultural contexts in the UK and internationally. A longstanding focus has been advancing animal welfare alongside human well-being, with over 14 years' experience in less industrialised countries, much of it engaging with working equines and the communities that rely on them. Joe holds an MSc in Tropical Veterinary Medicine, the RCVS Certificate in Animal Welfare Science, Ethics and Law, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Development Management.Paul Roger (Author) Paul Roger qualified as a veterinary surgeon in 1980, having previously gained degrees in Biochemistry and Physiology (BSc) and Physiology and Biochemistry of Farm Animals (MSc). He worked in mixed practice, developing his interests in sheep health and production and in animal welfare for over 25 years before setting up a consultancy in these areas of interest. He has been awarded the Diploma in Sheep Health and Production (RCVS) and has been granted emeritus specialist status in this. He also holds European Diplomas in Small Ruminant Health Management and in Animal Welfare, Ethics and Law. He is a past president of the Sheep Veterinary Society, the ECSRHM, AWSELVA and the Yorkshire Veterinary Society. He has experience in a wide range of veterinary situations and has acted as an expert witness for criminal and civil courts. As well as contributing to the literature in these disciplines, he has written articles for the lay press and been interviewed on radio and television and has regularly spoken at lay and professional meetings. Now retired, he is excited by the growing interest that this speciality is experiencing and hopes this book will enable a wider understanding of the overarching importance of animal welfare.
