Ian Stephen first published his poetry in The New Edinburgh Review in 1979. His first collection, Malin, Hebrides, Minches (1983) brought him into an international community of post-colonial literature through Anna Rutherford’s Dangaroo Press. This was followed by Varying States of Grace with Polygon (1989). As detailed reviews in The Scotsman and The Herald noted, the poems counterpointed insights from overland travel, from the Pays Basque to Iceland, with his ‘painterly’ depictions of his home island. His non-fiction ranges from Waypoints (Bloomsbury, 2014), shortlisted for the Saltire nonfiction book of the year, to Boatlines (Birlinn, 2023)
