He is the author of An Aesthetics in All Things: Melville, Beauty, and American Literary Studies, Not Even Past: The Stories We Keep Telling About the Civil War, and Nineteenth-Century American Literature and the Long Civil War; the editor of The New Melville Studies; and a co-editor of Timelines of American Literature. He lives with his family in Athens, Georgia.
