Originally published to accompany the second contemporary international Indigenous art exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada in 2019, Àbadakone | Continuous Fire | Feu continuel taps into the global pulse of Indigenous artistic production. It builds on themes of continuity, activation, and relatedness, exploring the creativity, concerns, and vitality of Indigenous art from virtually every continent. Àbadakone features work by more than 70 contemporary Indigenous artists identifying with almost 40 Indigenous nations, ethnicities, and tribal affiliations across Turtle Island and beyond, including Anishinaabe artist Rebecca Belmore, Maya-Tz’utujil artist Manuel Chavajay, and Hlubi artist Siwa Mgoboza. These stunning works are accompanied by major essays by artists and curators, covering topics as diverse as the curatorial methodology behind the exhibitions, Indigenous performance art, African art and Indigeneity, and the intersection of Indigenous art and global art history narratives in an age of post-colonialism and decolonization. Rachelle Dickenson is a curator of white settler (British, Irish) and Red River Métis ancestry, connected through kinship ties with Jesse (née Pruden) Dickenson and Bert Dickenson, and their children. She identifies like this to convey both her own experiences and the ways in which she carries her relatives with her. She has a PhD from Carleton University, Ottawa, and has taught courses in curatorial studies and Indigenous and white settler art histories. Most recently, Dickenson co-curated Nadia Myre: Waves of Want at the National Gallery of Canada (2025) and Stories My Father Couldn’t Tell Me: Jeff Thomas Origin with Jeff Thomas, in partnership with the Ottawa Art Gallery and the National Gallery of Canada (2024). She also co-curated 83 ’til Infinity: 40 Years of Hip-Hop in the Ottawa-Gatineau Region at the Ottawa Art Gallery (2023) with Kevin Bourne of SHIFTER magazine and curator Regatu Asefa. Rachelle Dickenson, conservatrice, est d’origine allochtone blanche (britannique et irlandaise) et métisse de la Rivière Rouge, apparentée à Jesse (née Pruden) Dickenson, Bert Dickenson et leurs enfants. Elle tient à cette identification, qui témoigne à la fois de son expérience personnelle et de la façon de porter ses proches en elle. Greg A. Hill is a multidisciplinary artist, curator, and consultant. From Fort Erie, Ontario, he is a Kanyen'keháka (Mohawk) member of the Six Nations of the Grand River. Hill’s artworks, primarily in performance, installation, and digital imaging, explore aspects of colonialism, nationalism, and concepts of place and community through the lens of his Kanyen'keháka and settler French ancestry. As a curator, Hill has worked in museums for almost 30 years, most notably as the National Gallery of Canada’s Audain Senior Curator of Indigenous Art, where he was dedicated to increasing the visibility of Indigenous art through ongoing displays throughout the permanent collection galleries. Hill greatly expanded the collection of Indigenous art, produced a series of retrospective exhibitions for senior Indigenous artists in Canada, and established a series of contemporary international Indigenous art exhibitions from which a leading collection of artworks has been acquired by many of the most significant national and international Indigenous artists of our time. Greg A. Hill est artiste multidisciplinaire, conservateur et conseiller. Né à Fort Erie, en Ontario, il appartient au peuple kanyen'keháka (mohawk), membre des Six Nations de Grand River. Sa pratique, fondée essentiellement sur la performance, l’installation et l’imagerie numérique, explore le colonialisme, le nationalisme et les concepts de lieu et de communauté dans la perspective de ses ancêtres kanyen'keháka et des colonisateurs français. À titre de conservateur, il a travaillé dans divers musées pendant près de 30 ans, notamment comme conservateur principal de l’art autochtone, Fonds Audain, au Musée des beaux-arts du Canada, dédiant notamment son mandat à la visibilité de cet art grâce à des présentations continues dans les galeries consacrées à la collection permanente. Il a d’ailleurs enrichi considérablement la collection d’art autochtone du Musée, organisé des rétrospectives d’artistes autochtones précurseurs, au Canada, et créé une série d’expositions d’art indigène contemporain de partout au monde qui ont suscité l’engouement des collectionneurs pour la crème des artistes autochtones de notre époque, d’envergure nationale et internationale. Christine Lalonde is a settler Canadian and a curator at the National Gallery of Canada, where she has worked across collections, primarily those of Indigenous and Canadian art.
