Even before his grandfather called him over to peer inside a cooler in front of a small country grocery store in 1959, eleven-year-old Tommy McCabe knew what he wanted; a fish like Grampa’s. An old photo from 1925 had started it all, one taken of his grandfather hoisting a large, Pelican Lake musky, but it was the behemoth in the cooler and his grandfather’s words that turned the boy’s interest into an obsession. It would lead to a decades-long journey marked with one humorous misadventure after another, punctuated with the inevitable frustration so common among the majority of folks who chase that cagey, wonderful fish.
