"The Scapegoat" was Jocelyn Brooke's first novel, published in 1948. It is set in the Kentish countryside. If he were better known the term 'Brookeland' might have been coined to describe that part of Kent that he returned to repeatedly in his autobiographical fiction, a landscape he made uniquely his own, creating a sort of youthful Elysium imbued with homoerotic longing. Of this title the novelist, Peter Cameron, has written, 'For a book written when and where it was, "The Scapegoat" is almost unbelievably subversive and kinky ...I can think of few books that are as erotically and dramatically charged as "The Scapegoat"'. Faber Finds is dedicated to restoring Jocelyn Brooke's reputation. He may not be a major writer but he created his own world, one that is as distinctive as those created by Ronald Firbank and Denton Welch. The following titles have been reissued: "The Military Orchid and Other Novels", "The Image of the Drawn Sword", "The Scapegoat", "The Dog at Clambercrown" and "Conventional Weapons".
