Structuralist Controversy

Richard Macksey is a professor in the Humanities Center at the Johns Hopkins University, where in 1999 the Richard A. Macksey Professorship for Distinguished Teaching in the Humanities was endowed in his honor. Prior to his death in 1983, Eugenio Donato was a professor and chair of the Department of French and Italian at the University of California, Irvine.

Although its original applications were in linguistics and anthropology, structuralism has also cut across sociology, history, philosophy, psychiatry, criticism, the comparative study of arts and letters, classical studies, and other disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. Participating were many of the leading figures of the structuralist dialogue-Barthes, Derrida, Lacan, Goldman, and the late Jean Hyppolite-and this is a useful demonstration of the movement, its aims and methods.
