Sanda S. Heinz is a Visiting Scholar in the Art History Department at Dartmouth College and was a recent Jane and Morgan Whitney art history fellow in the Department of Egyptian Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She received her BA in Classical Civilizations and European Studies from Loyola Marymount University and her MPhil in Classical Archaeology and DPhil in Archaeology from the University of Oxford. Her research interests encompass a broad spectrum of topics relating to the Late and Ptolemaic Periods in Egypt: cross-cultural interactions; self-representation and identity; dedication practices and personal piety; large-scale statuary such as naophoroi and theophoroi; bronze, lead, and terracotta statuettes; amulets; Osiris cult; underwater archaeology; and metal casting technology. For over a decade, she has worked as an archaeologist, researcher, or artefact specialist on projects in several countries including Egypt, Italy, Germany, and Oman. She has published numerous articles and has given invited talks in the US and Europe. Her work with the Institut Européen d'Archéologie Sous-Marine (IEASM) on the Thonis-Heracleion project began in 2008 and continues. Her next project, inspired by the Thonis-Heracleion statuettes, focuses on the unpublished bronze statuettes from Saqqara, with material from the Egypt Exploration Society archive in London.
