First published in 1899, with a second edition following in 1900 – just four years prior to the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese War – this in-depth study of Russia’s great expansion into Asia describes in detail the policies which brought it about. It is based on over 200 sources, both from Russian and British official documents. The accounts of the military expeditions have been drawn primarily from Russian sources whilst the part played by diplomacy is sourced from official correspondence and British government publications.
