Health and social care services are most heavily used by older people, and mental health conditions, both organic and functional, have a particularly high impact as people age, not only through their direct consequences for those affected and their carers, but also their wider adverse effects on other common health conditions and 'frailty' more generally. Yet despite its importance, old age psychiatry has not been overburdened with textbooks. However, the Oxford Textbook of Old Age Psychiatry has a long and noble ancestry. Beginning with Felix Post's Clinical Psychiatry of Late Life, back in 1965, it continued to develop with three editions of Psychiatry in the Elderly, edited by Robin Jacoby and Catherine Oppenheimer, first published in 1991, which over time became the Oxford Textbook of Old Age Psychiatry. This latest edition reflects the longstanding importance of this text and its unique coverage of not only all relevant clinical conditions but of services, ethics, and other wider aspects of clinical practice. This fully updated fourth edition also includes new chapters examining Carers and Dementia, Eating Disorders, Autism and Neurodiversity, as well as other topics. The authors contributing to this book continue to be drawn from experts in the field from around the world, thereby enabling it to maintain relevancy to clinicians everywhere.

Alan Thomas is Professor of Old Age Psychiatry at Newcastle University where he has led clinical and laboratory studies in Lewy Body Dementia and in late-life depression for many years. He is also Director of the UK multi-centre Brains for Dementia Research (BDR) Programme, Clinical Director of Newcastle Brain Tissue Resource and has served as a Consultant Psychiatrist in the UK National Health Service for over 20 years, including leading Memory Services and Community based services for people with 'functional' mental illnesses.Rob Stewart joined King's College London's Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience in 1996 and has developed his clinical research career there, appointed as Professor of Psychiatric Epidemiology and Clinical Informatics in 2012. His research has covered the epidemiology of dementia and late-life mental disorders, the interfaces between physical and mental health, and international mental health. Since 2007, he has led the academic development of the Clinical Record Interactive Search (CRIS) data resource at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust - an influential model for using mental health records to support research.John-Paul Taylor has been Professor of Translational Dementia Research at Newcastle University since 2019. He is also an Honorary Consultant in Old Age Psychiatry and has led a specialist Lewy body disease clinic since 2010, alongside working in a local memory clinic. His research focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of dementia, particularly Lewy body dementia, and he has published over 300 papers in this field. He is Chair of the International Consortium for Dementia with Lewy Bodies (from 2025) and Deputy Chair of the United Kingdom Dementia Trials Network.Tom Dening is Professor of Dementia Research, University of Nottingham, since 2012. He qualified in Medicine at Newcastle and obtained his MD with research on the Neuropsychiatry of Wilson's Disease. His more recent research has focused on psychosocial aspects of dementia, and on dementia and hearing loss. He has over 200 peer-reviewed publications and has recently co-edited books on Mental Health in Care Homes and Design for Dementia, Mental Health & Wellbeing. In 2023, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Faculty of Old Age Psychiatry, Royal College of Psychiatrists.
