On the way to Högsby : a book of Småland

"It is tempting to look at the landscape around Högsby as a forgotten
part of the country. People have left these forests, industries
have waned and withered. But Nature is so strong, so dominant
in these parts that there is little point in lamenting that people
have had to give up and move on. In fact, we may be thankful
that Nature here continues to reveal her mysteries to us.
The forests around beautiful Lake Allgunnen tell stories of human
limits - just as cities and suburban shopping centers are
brash attempts to deny those limits.
Here the modern visitor stands before a terra incognita, a
landscape that in many respects is less familiar than the more
remote mountains of Arctic Sweden.
There is an attraction, a fascination in a landscape like this -
and a potential. Evocative of our past, it represents a valuable
resource for the future of Högsby as a community."
