Beskrivning
The book examines the relationship between migration, geopolitics, and geoeconomics, taking geopolitics as its common perspective and incorporating the geoeconomic dimension to varying degrees. The volume is situated in a context in which migration governance is becoming more nationally and bilaterally oriented while continuing to operate within regional and multilateral frameworks. Against this background, the central question is how geopolitical and institutional positions, material resources, and dependencies shape the capacity of states and other actors to govern and use mobility, and how mobility, in turn, reshapes power relations in a context of interdependence. The chapters combine conceptual discussion and empirical analysis across different historical and geographic contexts. They address, among other topics, migration diplomacy, externalization and access to asylum, diaspora relations, internal displacement, securitization, climate-related migration, education, transnational repression, and regional governance. The volume responds to the fragmentation of research on migration and international power by bringing together processes that are often examined within separate research agendas. Taken together, the chapters compare different ways in which power is exercised and examine how actors’ positions, resources, and dependencies shape their capacity to act. The volume also examines how geopolitical and geoeconomic dynamics intersect, without assuming that they operate in the same way across different historical and institutional contexts. The chapters show that power relations remain asymmetrical, but that actors with fewer resources may nevertheless retain bargaining capacity and room for action. The book is intended for scholars, students, and practitioners interested in migration, international relations, political geography, and migration governance.
