The Lenborough hoard is one of the largest finds of late Anglo-Saxon coins ever found, consisting of over 5,200 silver pennies of Æthelred II (978–1016) and Cnut (1016–35). It provides a unique insight into the currency of the early eleventh century, and the state and economy that produced it. This volume offers a full description of the hoard’s contents, giving information and images of every coin. It also presents a digested study of the hoard’s significance, drawing out the implications of the different types, mints and moneyers represented in it. The largest, latest element of the hoard is found to show a remarkable degree of die-linking: of coins made from the exact same dies or stamps, suggesting they have not been broken up between production and circulation. This conclusion offers important clues to the possible identity of the individual or group who originally owned and deposited the hoard. Taken as a whole, this volume offers a groundbreaking study into a single huge assemblage, with ramifications for all those interested in early medieval England and its neighbours.
