True to its title, The Artful Naturalist highlights the creative role of the naturalist: one who works to describe the world. The project, born of a transnational collective of scholars and artists, opens an ongoing dialogue exploring how knowledge is made.Drawing on artifacts as diverse as photographs, soundscapes, social media, performance art, fossils, and speculative fiction, the book reimagines the proceedings of nineteenth-century natural history societies to ask how categories such as “nature,” “culture,” “technology,” and “religion” are continually remade. The Artful Naturalist blends scholarship, artistic practice, and collective experimentation to demonstrate how natural and social sciences remain entangled with colonial systems sustaining the divide between culture and nature today. Inspired by environmental humanities, religious studies, anthropology, and contemporary art, it is also an extended meditation on method that challenges traditions of expertise and critique by foregrounding curiosity, vulnerability, and play.In this work collaborative inquiry generates new ways of thinking across disciplinary boundaries. Readers are invited into the conversation, to linger with artifacts, question inherited classifications, and join a shared reimagining of more livable futures for humans and nonhumans alike.
