Editor Maaza Mengiste's debut novel, Beneath the Lion's Gaze, was published by Norton and was selected as a best book by several publications, including the Guardian and the Boston Globe. The novel was also a finalist for an NAACP Image Award and an Indies Choice Book of the Year Award.

Mengiste's new novel, The Shadow King, will be published by Norton in September 2019. The book is hotly anticipated and has appeared on many "Most Anticipated Novels of 2019" lists; we expect the publication to be a major event and will piggyback on any promotion we can. (She will be doing the festival circuit and other events well into 2020.)

Mengiste received an MFA from NYU and teaches at both Queens College and Princeton University.
