This is a collection of more than 120 articles and book reviews on Japan, China, and India published in the four leading British reviews of the nineteenth century (the Quarterly Review, Edinburgh Review, Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine, and the Westminster Review). The selection from those reviews, which represented the four principal shades of mainstream contemporary political opinion (conservative, liberal, radical, and Tory), shows us the variety of Victorian views on Asia and enables us to trace their chronological changes. Contributors include important Orientalists and/or Japanologists, such as L. Oliphant, R. Alcock, J. Conder, F. V. Dickins, R. K. Douglas, and economists such as H. Martineau.
