Rites of Life

Everywhere in the world, among all people, ceremony marks the transitions from one stage of life to another. For more than seven years, photographer and anthropologist Anders Ryman traveled around the world and documented more than thirty rites—baptism, accession to manhood, confirmation, graduation and marriage, to name but a few. The result is a book of powerful images and compelling words depicting the ways people around the world engage in life’s most important moments. Culture, religion and traditions may vary dramatically, but we humans are fundamentally very similar and we all possess a need to manifest the steps we take on the path of life.
