Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was born in Frankfurt in 1749 and died in Weimar in 1832. A prolific poet from an early age, he was also known as a man of letters, translator, editor and playwright and was active in public affairs as an administrator and a soldier. Goethe came to prominence with the publication of his first novella The Sorrows of Young Werther in 1774. He worked on his dramatic poem, Faust, for much of his creative life and the first of its two parts is considered his masterpiece.A Bridport and Cholmondeley winner with over twenty collections, including The Silence (Carcanet, 2019) and Omniscience (Broken Sleep, 2022), John Greening has edited Grigson, Blunden, and Crichton Smith as well as anthologies on music, sheds and country houses (with Kevin Gardner: Hollow Palaces, Liverpool, 2021).
