It's a sign of how many years have passed since the Second World War when even the first generation descendants of the principals are in their dotage. This book is a collection of interviews with the children of prominent Nazis, from shortly after the war and then again recently, 40 years after: Gudrun Himmler, Martin Boorman Jnr, Etta G ring, and so on in their seventies. Rather than showing that attitudes can mellow, this book exemplifies just how hardened feelings and emotions can be - even after almost half a century. Gudrun Himmler, for instance, runs a network for old Nazis in Munich and still refuses to accept her father's guilt. Others are just as implacably and reassuringly set against the sins of their fathers, but ultimately this book demonstrates just how deep the old animosities and certainties were - and are. One leaves off reading with a sense of foreboding. All in all, a chastening piece of good journalism, if not very reassuring reading.
