Maine: A Portrait is the result of Lucian Niemeyer's desire to explore the Maine viewed by his inspiration, Eliot Porter. Following the geography of the state, from the coast to the north woods, it is a photographic interpretation based on Niemeyer's focus on "the natural order." Using his photographs and text, combined with elegant and revealing excerpts from the writings of Rachel Carson and Louise Dickinson Rich, Neimeyer compiles his view of Maine throughout the seasons. "Maine has many stories," Neimeyer says, "and I do not profess to tell them all. Rather, I attempts to provide a significant overview of this beautiful piece of geography and its people."
