Learning Democracy in Japan

Professor Thomas has written the first book in English on the evolution of adult education in Japan, and its role in shaping a democratic society. He describes the rich range of adult education and, in the context of the sometimes turbulent Japanese history of social upheaval, he examines the relationship between adult education and social change. In particular, he asks whether Japanese adult education is connected with economic success.
