Desideria Oliván, una joven de Huesca con decepciones matrimoniales, en el curso de un viaje turístico por Turquía descubre repentinamente la pasión amorosa más avasalladora en los brazos de Yamam, y, a pesar de que no sabe casi nada de él, lo deja todo para vivir a su lado en Estambul. Pasa el tiempo, y la intensidad de este amor persiste, pero las relaciones de los dos amantes se van haciendo cada vez más dramáticas y más sórdidas, hasta que el reencuentro de Desideria con un antiguo amigo suyo que pertenece a la Interpol revela la verdadera naturaleza de las actividades lucrativas de Yamam.

La historia, admirablemente contada a través de unos supuestos cuadernos íntimos de la protagonista, constituye una amarga meditación sobre el amor llevado a sus últimas consecuencias en medio de un clima muy patético, hasta la destrucción física y moral, que Antonio Gala sabe describir con la irresistible fuerza de su estilo.

Desideria Oliván, a young woman from Huesca with marital disappointments, in the course of a tourist trip through Turkey suddenly discovers the most overwhelming amorous passion in Yamam's arms, and, despite the fact that she knows almost nothing about him, she leaves everything to live with him in Istanbul.Time passes, and the intensity of this love persists, but the relations of the two lovers become more and more dramatic and more sordid, until Desideria's reunion with an old friend of hers who belongs to Interpol reveals the true nature of Yamam's lucrative activities.

The story, admirably told through the protagonist's supposed intimate notebooks, is a bitter meditation on love taken to its ultimate consequences in the midst of a very pathetic climate, to the point of physical and moral destruction, which Antonio Gala knows how to describe with the irresistible force of his style.
