JULIE GILSON is Lecturer in Japanese studies and Deputy Director of Asian studies at the University of Birmingham. She graduated from Sheffield University in 1993 with a master's degree in international relations, and subsequently spent three years as a research scholar at Keio and Waseda Universities in Tokyo. During that time she completed a PhD on Japan's relations with the European Union, also for Sheffield University.
