Beginning with an overview of critical care medicine, this workbook uses examples of patient cases that build throughout several chapters to illustrate skill applications described in the text. This first set of cases focuses on development of comprehensive patient-specific problem lists. The next group of cases covers maintaining and updating the patient-specific database. All the cases highlight additional questions and considerations to enhance the quality of care provided to the patients on service. Mary M Hess, Pharm.D., FASHP, FCCM is Associate Dean for Student Affairs, and Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice, Jefferson School of Pharmacy. Dr Hess graduated with a BS in Pharmacy from the University of Missouri Kansas City, USA and a Doctor of Pharmacy from the St Louis College of Pharmacy in 1987 and 1990 respectively. Dr Hess completed a Critical Care/Nutrition residency, 1991 and a Critical Care Fellowship at the University of Tennessee in 1993. Dr Hess has held academic positions throughout her career, including roles as postgraduate training program director and health systems leadership for clinical pharmacy services.Dr Hess has received Best Practice awards for innovative design of academic courses and for clinical services design in the health system. She has served as the Chair of the Commission on Credentialing, as the critical care network facilitator in the Section of Clinical Specialists & Scientists within ASHP and several other committees within ASHP, American Colleges of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) and the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM). Dr Hess has served on the Board member for an Accredited Technician training program and as part of the design team for the ASHP Research Foundation Critical Care Traineeship.
