MENNO SPIERING is Lecturer at the Department of European Studies, University of Amsterdam; Director of the MA in European Studies Programme of the International School of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Amsterdam, and executive editor of European Studies: A Journal of European Culture, History and Politics. His publications include Englishness: Images of National Identity in Postwar Literature and a number of articles on national identity and European identity. - MICHAEL WINTLE is Chair of European History at the University of Hull. He has organized international conferences on European identity, on European colonialism, and on Image into Identity. His publications include Culture and Identity in Europe, An Economic and Social History of the Netherlands, and The ideas of a United Europe.
